It is easy to fall into debt because it only takes a change in circumstances such as illness or redundancy for manageable credit to become un-payable debt. The consequences can be devastating with eviction, family breakdown and even suicide. The reason debt is so overwhelming is that people often do not know what steps to take to reverse their situation. Christians Against Poverty partners with local churches across the UK to deliver top quality debt counselling services. The charity operates through a growing network of UK centres. CAP began in 1996 when John Kirkby, armed with a £10 donation, started to help people in his local community who were trapped in debt. The charity is now a fast-paced, growing organisation whose vision is to answer the national problem of debt in the UK by having at least one CAP centre operating in every major town and city by the year 2021.
The charity's overarching objective is to work towards the relief of poverty among people who are in debt, specifically by providing telephone money advice casework services, enabling people to maximise their income, reschedule their borrowings if possible and better manage their finances in the longer term.
